{Who} Harry Potter, Hermione Granger
{Where} St. Mungo's
{When} June 18th
{Why} ...because Harry finally decided to go visit Hermione ^.^

Harry felt flustered and guilty as he waited for the nurse to lead him to Hermione's room in the Critical Condition ward. He hadn't talked to Hermione in so long, he was ashamed of himself...

And Hermione had been attacked, for Merlin's sake. And he hadn't been there, or near her anytime soon.

He sighed, and gave the nurse a tight smile as she told him to follow her.

Hermione was tired. Tired of being cooped up in the Critical Condition ward, tired of being in critical condition, tired of being alone in the hospital. And those were the basics. Every day, she received tubes of clean blood. It stopped bothering her wrists the first two weeks of having needles injected. So much so that they left the needle in her wrist and changed it every so often.

She tucked a loose strand of brown hair behind her ear and sighed, pulling the papers that Ginny had occasionally brought to her and folded them open. She tilted her head towards the articles from Rita Skeeter, but didn't dare bother reading them. They were a waste of her time anyway. A nurse, her nurse Delia, smiled and told her she had a visitor. Hermione gave her a weak smile in return as she shut the door. She didn't really think too much of it. Bringing people to her was not the same as being able to bring herself to them. She wanted out of the hospital so bad, she could have cried for it.

[is this okay? :P]
Harry smiled politely and thanked the nurse. Then he took a look at Hermione and couldn't contain a gasp. His friend was bone thin, pale, had dark rings around her eyes and her usually bushy hair was now looking sick itself.

Feeling his cheeks heat up in anger at what someone had done to her friend - and also in guilt, because he hadn't been there when the girl had needed him, he took a deep breath to steady himself and moved forward to the bed. "Hello, Hermione," he said quietly, not sure how she would react to his presence.

[yep! *cackles*]
Hermione heard someone call her. The voice was familiar, but not definitely. She looked up and saw Harry standing there. Everything around her froze. She would have bet there were ominous chirping noises, but she blinked and focused her eyes on him.

And then, all of her emotions rained down on her. Anger, happiness, fear, regretfulness. She wasn't sure how she felt about him being here now. Sure, like him being there before would have helped her. But it at least would have been nice to know that he knew who she was.

"How's your life." She said bitterly, almost reflecting it so it was not a question. But it was a question. She didn't wait for an answer. "Let's see. Still difficult, hm? You must have been jumping through rings of fire while I was just sitting here and dying. I'm sure you have thirty people whose lives you saved. I'm sure you have a pretty good reason as to why I haven't seen you for roughly three months. Yeah. And I'm sure it has everything to do with Draco."

Hermione was not upset with Draco. She was not upset that Harry would put Draco before her. That did not upset her. What did was that every waking moment of his life he had spent worrying about the blonde. Sure, Hermione would have appreciated a visit every week or even less, a phone call. But she didn't even get that. And after being nearly killed. The only person who was there for her while she was in the hospital was Ginny...and sometimes Ron, when he could bear her. Not Harry. Not even once, until now.

"It always does." She said quietly, not looking at him. She was sure her sickly appearance was a shock to him. Of course it was. She was used to being sick. So was everyone else. They didn't like to see the strong and fantastically brilliant Hermione this way, but they had no choice. Bandages were around her wrist and tied lightly around her neck. She had just recovered from overnight pneumonia. She was glad to even be alive. But now this. This stress. With a sigh, she looked down, pulling at the loose fabric of her bandages, anger and hurt and betrayal in her eyes.

Harry closed his eyes tightly. He deserved hearing his. Oh, he did. All of it. He knew it - but it didn't make it any easier to hear.

He opened his eyes to look at Hermione again, and didn't even bother to dry the tears falling down his cheeks. "I'm sorry," he whispered brokenly. It wasn't adequate, it wasn't enough. It didn't give him an opportunity to redo things. But it was all he could do now.

He pulled the chair closer and sat on it. He wanted to repeat those words like a mantra, but it wouldn't work. All he could do was trust their friendship - or what remained of it - and hope for the best.

"I'm sorry too." She said to herself, her eyes flaring with her emotions swimming through tears. She hadn't cried for so long. She had long since stopped crying because of the pain of her injuries. But her eyes ached and would have bled if they could. It was just to show how long she hadn't been upset or in pain. It was almost an escape.

She tilted her head, still looking down. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do now. I've fixed our friendship so many times it feels like it's just one of those vases that you run into and just...magic it back the way it was. Almost so that every time you break it, you care less and less if you break it again because you can fix it, but it's pretty much pointless if it's going to break again."

Hermione bit her lip. She wasn't trying to be harsh. She was upset. This was about three years worth of pain spilling out of her and some of it was going forth in words. She would never be able to be content with her life as long as she was holding pain inside of her.

Harry shook his head slowly, swallowing a sob. "I won't break it again, Hermione, I swear," he said in a thick voice. "You mean too much to me... I know I don't deserve it, but..." He scooted forward in the chair and placed his hand over hers. "Give me one more chance? Please?"

Hermione looked over at him, curiousity and hurt in her eyes. "What happened to us over the years? Did we just...not get along? I don't understand. I can't figure it out. I at least thought we were close enough to be one person."

She sighed, looking down at her bandaged hand again and Harry's, which was placed over it. She nodded. "I'm just hurt, you know? Bothered. I don't understand how we grew so far apart." Hermione averted her eyes. She had some idea.

He too looked down at their hands. "I do. I was selfish, and I ignored my friends - ignored you - to spend more time torturing myself..." He scoffed and shook his head at himself, "thinking and mooning over someone who, for all I know, doesn't even return my feelings anymore."

Harry sighed. "I think - I understand how you feel. And thank you, for giving me another opportunity." He bit his lip and looked up at his friend. Suddenly making up his mind, he leaned in and placed a kiss on her cheek, before resting his forehead on the sick girl's shoulder, his arm around her slight frame. "I missed you, 'Mione. And to think I almost lost you... I need to start thanking God for what I have," he confessed with a slight smile.

She sighed. Damn him for always getting the best of her. Even though she was sitting here in sickness, she still felt bad for him. She bit her lip as she listened. "Well, thank God that I'm still here. I hate being here, though. It's annoying as hell. And well, as for ignoring me, that'll be easily made up for. As for who you were ignoring me for, you can't force feelings. I don't know what to say about that situation." She huffed, before looking over at him with a smile.

"I'm glad you finally came to see me, though. I'm going to go crazy here soon. I figure I should be here at the least a month and a half." She wrinkled her nose in disappointment. She didn't feel like staying there. But she needed to get better. Damn being attacked! Damn it all and the blood she lost because of it.

Harry smiled and raised his head to look at her. "I promise you I'll visit regularly," he said, winking. He got up from the chair and nudged Hermione's feet so he could sit in front of her on the bed. Then he picked up her bandaged hands. "Wanna tell me what happened?" Harry asked quietly.
Jun. 21st, 2007 07:58 pm (UTC)
Hermione drew her feet up with no trouble, laying her arms across them. A smile overcame her features and then disappeared slightly after his question. "A lot happened. I was packing up my things. Er, yeah. And after I finished, I was going to move them when I ran into Oliver, who wanted to give me a hand. So, we were getting started on that and then all of a sudden...I was just unconscious. I woke up and I was at my house. I..I didn't see who was over me, but I could tell they had taken care of Oliver and that was when they slashed me. Across my wrists," she told him, turning her palms up," and around my neck." She pulled her head up to show him the bandage there. "They proceeded to drag me outside and left me on the side of the new house. I could hardly move and I was bleeding too much to do anything too much about it."

"However, after about...a day or two? Aurors showed up and were scaling the house. They took Oliver in for questioning and held him for a while, but then they released him. Ginny was there, she had called the Aurors in the first place. And I've been here for two months, living off of blood transfusions so that my own blood can restore itself. I had pneumonia for a while, but that went away. It's just this blood thing that I have to do. I'll probably not be able to walk afterwards."

She sighed, tired from telling the story. "I'm pretty much drained and I don't really get up for anything. But Harry," she said, her eyes now fixed on him, "I know who it was. I just...I don't think I need to turn them in. I know what the intentions were."
Jun. 26th, 2007 09:35 pm (UTC)
Harry gaped at Hermione. "My God, Hermione. It sounds like a horror movie plot... wizards version," he said with a forced smile, trying to be funny. Then he shook his head. "I don't understand. They tried to kill you, whoever they were. Why? Why don't you say who it was?"
Jun. 27th, 2007 05:08 am (UTC)
She sighed gently, for about the fifteenth time that day, before looking at Harry with a solemn face. "It's just...I understand what they were thinking. I don't know, Harry, I don't think you get it. But if you were in the same position as I am, you would understand how I feel. They...well, they had to do what they did to me."

And she said nothing else. She wouldn't recount how she saw the pain in the girl's dark eyes. Or how she apologised for her act of deception. And how, even as soon as the lights began to black in Hermione's eyes, she showed disdain and disgust for what she had done. Only Hermione would get that. Maybe it was her own naivety, but she sincerely believed that it would have been avoided if it could have been.

Harry stared at her for a few moments, his green eyes dark as he studied her. "You know this person," he said quietly. "You've met them before." It wasn't a question - he was almost certain Hermione knew who attacked her.

Harry allowed himself a soft smile before getting serious again, though his eyes were twinkling. "You say they only did what they had to? Well, I feel my 'hero instinct', or whatever, is calling."
